ABOUT

THE HISTORIC 1894

The Ritchie Grocery Building, situated at the historic intersection of Front and Olive Streets in Texarkana, Arkansas, stands as a testament to the city's rich past.

Constructed in 1894 under the ownership of Francis Mullins, who led the Texas Produce Company, the area's pioneering grocery wholesaler founded in 1884. This two-story brick and masonry structure features a flat roof and an impressive parapet along its main facade, showcasing Romanesque Revival architecture—a unique and rare gem in downtown Texarkana.

In 1926, it found a new home with the Ritchie Grocery Company. In 2017, 1894 LLC took the reins, embarking on an ambitious renovation project to restore this historic building to its original splendor, renaming it the 1894 City Market and eventually The Historic 1894.

Today, it houses a hidden speakeasy in the basement, an art gallery on the first floor, an elegant event room on the second floor, and loft apartments on the third, preserving its legacy and charm.

This architectural treasure earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990, a symbol of Texarkana's enduring heritage.

THE TEXARKANAN - coming fall 2024

The Texarkanan, set to open in Fall 2024, represents a compelling chapter in Texarkana's architectural and historical narrative. This remarkable structure, currently in the process of applying for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places, stands as an enduring testament to the city's past. Constructed around 1914, the original eight-story Texarkana National Bank building, characterized by its red brick facade adorned with classical-style ornamentation, has witnessed a fascinating evolution.

In the 1920s, the bank underwent an expansion, doubling its available rental space to accommodate a diverse array of tenants, including doctors, lawyers, dentists, architects, investment firms, and construction companies. However, a transformative attempt around 1970 encased the building in a modern façade featuring white aluminum, stucco, and marble.

Texarkana National Bank remained the primary occupant until 1997, after which a significant tenant exodus occurred between 1997 and 2004. New Orleans-based Hibernia Bank and later Capital One briefly occupied the building.

Today, a dedicated restoration effort is underway to reclaim the Texarkanan's historical splendor. The building's lobby space and mezzanine are being meticulously restored to their "palace"-like beauty, adopting the art deco style that was fashionable during the building's 1924-25 expansion. The ground floor's granite, terra cotta, and brick exterior are also undergoing restoration, utilizing various techniques to clean and repair the structure and its sculptural ornamentation. New windows with frames in the original hunter green and a red paint that matches the bricks are part of the comprehensive renovation plan.

As The Texarkanan prepares to open its doors in Fall 2024, it stands not only as a symbol of Texarkana's rich history but also as a shining example of historic preservation, ready to welcome a new era of tenants and visitors to this architectural gem.
